Students are working on a World War II unit in class.  Each student chose a partner and topic to research for this unit.  We have class time with iPads for research; however, students must complete research, write an oral report, and bring in at least 4 pictures to share with the class.
 
These pictures can be printed off of the internet, be pages from a book or other source.
 
Oral reports will begin on Thursday, April 24th.
 
Attached are the directions for research students were given during class.

Students are working with a partner to research a topic of choice within World War II.  Students have specific guidelines for research, and class time has been given with our iPads.
 
Class time will also be given to create an oral presentation.  The parts of the presentation that cannot be completed in class are the visual aides.  Students need to bring in at least 4 visual aides to show the class during their oral presentations.  Students can bring in books with photographs or images printed off the computer. Or, students can create a power point.
 
Specific guidelines for writing the presentation along with the scaled for grading was given to students on Monday, April 14th.
 
Oral presentations begin on April 23rd; all students must be ready to present on this date, and it will likely take 2 days for all presentations to be delivered.

Students will take a final exam on the novel The Outsiders. Students have study questions and answers, along with vocabulary to prepare for this test.

Students must submit the final draft of their essays either in printed form or online.  If students turn in a printed essay, I will grade it with corrections.
 
If a student chooses to have me grade the online version, a grade will be given without specific corrections.  If a student would like to go over the essay on line either before or after school for discussion, we will agree on a time for this.

In class, students began an essay, and the rough draft or outline is due Wednesday. On Wednesday, students will type their essays into MyAccess, a computerized program that will guide students through editing their papers.

On February 19, students will begin a 3-day district English Language Arts test which is a released item from the new Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.  Students will read several pieces, answer short answers, and complete writing an essay.  All parts of this assessment have been taught during class this year.

Newspaper Article regarding an incident that occurred in chapter 4 of The Outsiders. Students need to include: Must be in dark blue or black ink, must have a title and your name as author, setting, unbiased point of view, correctly written dialogue with at least 4 lines of conversation, may make assumptions of what could have happened, vivid written description, and a conclusion. This article should cover one full page.

Vocabulary foldable for the seven words from the Outsiders, chapters 1-3.  Students have the vocabulary and blank white paper to create the foldable.  Instructions and models were shown in class.

Timeline on the 1960's is due.  Students received specific instructions and materials needed during class. The guidelines: 3 examples from each category of the 1960's research; this totals 24 examples.  This is a visual timeline so all information should be represented in symbols, icons, illustrations, pictures printed and cut out, and all images should have captions.Timeline must have color. Nothing should be in plain pencil.  All dates and words should be in ink.

Students have eight-squares of research on the 1960's due today.  They will receive a grade for this assignment. In class, students took notes on this information and are now turning it into a visual time line.  
 
If a student did not complete the research, he or she can add to it by Thursday, so his or her time line can earn a good grade.

Students were assigned research for either the Great Depression or the recession from 2007-2009.  They used iPads in class today and had to find 5 examples for EACH of these 5 catagories.  Answers need to be in complete sentences.

Lifestyle prior to the event. ( Either 1920s going into the 1930s or the 1990s going into 2006

For Homework, students need to complete at least 5 examples for 3 of the catagories.  Most students finished 2 catagories in class today.  Tomorrow students will have 20 minutes to complete the remaining 2 catagories.

Students have been writing a short story in class and the completed rough draft is due Friday, November 8th.

If the rough draft is complete, the student will work with an editing partner to score both stories using a Rubric Scale for guidance.

Students need to choose a biography or autobiography by Tuesday, October 29th. On Friday, October 25th, students will spend time in Alvarado's library looking through our available biographies and autobiographies.

Books have to be at least 125 words in length.
No comic-style books are allowed.

Students should be reading this book regularly. A variety of assignments will revolve around the book. An assignment which covers the entire book will be given in class on Monday and Tuesday, November 25th and 26th.

Correct margins on all four sides
Writing on one side of the paper only

Research projects will go down one full grade each day it is late.

In class, students had three days for research on a topic designed to match the story we are reading in class.

Students should have many notecards on information obtained.

Students were given a structure for the body of the the research report.

On Monday, September 30, students will have thirty minutes to begin their rough drafts and ask questions specific to their own needs.

The rough draft is to be completed as homework.

Students will be given ten sentences, and they will insert a semicolon where it is needed.

An essay on recycling is due Friday, September 6th. Students need to turn in the following: Final draft with bibliography, rough draft, and note cards used to gather research. Students have been taken through every step of essay writing in class. On Tuesday, students worked with editing partners to edit both his or her own rough draft and the partner's essay.

Students have three nights to write a final draft. This allows for access to a computer/printer if desired. Also, if a student believes his or her essay is incomplete this time can be used for further research.

Students have a handout with the details of how a final draft must be presented now and throughout the school year.

A foldable.
Students have seen a model in class, and this foldable was explained. A piece of paper is folded in 1/2, and the cover along with both inside halves need 9 sections marked off horizontally. On the front, students list the 8 steps to research.

On the left side, students define each step, and on the right side, students draw an image that will help them remember each stage.

These are graded on creativity, neatness, and completeness.
