Mrs. Armstrong 7th Grade Science (Period B) Assignments

PREPARE FOR YOUR Ch 12.1 & 12.2 FINAL EXAM TOMORROW !!! 40 scantron questions plus one diagram, must be completed in the one class period. BE SURE TO BRING YOUR EXCELLENT VALUABLE CHEAT NOTECARD TO CLASS. Also study the handouts :Cyber Ed Fossils H.O., rock formations in the relative dating H.O. -The one with the child ran through mud puddle on the front , finding clues in rock layers H.O., and dating the fossil record H.O.which has uplift diagrams on the last page.

The last 3 days we have been viewing the wonderful documentary "Galapagos Beyond Darwin". Days 1 and 2 we saw 40 min of video and the homework was to add 5 higher level questions to 5 of your bullet notes. Today we saw the last 35 min of it and tonight homework is to add 4-5 more questions to todays bullets and students were given a blank piece of white paper on which they are to draw pictures of 2 of the animals (land or sea) they found most interesting or were their top 2 favorites from the video. Required is to write a caption for each picture of 3-4 sentences describing its features/adaptations and telling what they learned about it and how it is unique and special. Due Friday 5/24.

Tuesday 5/14 homework is:
Complete BOTH SIDES of page 3 of Checkpoint 4 review packet. It is mainly on rock formations and the law of superposition. You WILL WANT TO USE last week Thursday's assignment titled " Relative Dating Activity" (remember the mud puddle and the child ran through it and then it hailed?) Inside is the list of rock formations and their definitions, and a sample we graded that put the rock layers, faults, intrusions, etc in order form oldest to youngest. Please use this to help with the vocabulary and diagrams on tonight's homework pages!! REMINDING YOU THAT OUR FOURTH AND FINAL DISTRICT CHECKPOINT TEST #4 IS THIS THURSDAY MAY 16TH!! PLEASE BE PREPARED AND REVIEW CH. 11 AND 12.1 AND 12.2 EACH NIGHT!!

I have decided to move the Chapter 11 Evolution: Change Over Time Test to Monday the 29th of April because of the very short class periods Tues–Fridays. Monday is a regular schedule with no state testing that day and is a full period in length. Please start reviewing 11.1 evidence for evolution at this time and then work your way through 11.2 Natural Selection and 11.3 Steps for Speciation to be prepared for testing. I will give a review packet on Friday and students should also revisit the 12 vocabulary words to refresh their memory.

Know how this explains and supports Natural Selection/ Survival of the fittest. Know the 4 steps to speciation and what happens in each step that leads to the formation of a new species. Tonight's homework is a quickie (15 min.) 4 flap foldable on the four steps of Speciation. You saw a sample in class and the four labels are: Barriers, Isolation, Adaptations, and Differentiation (which can develop a new species!) You only have to lift the flap and write a description/definition of it with an example from either the book ( in textbook page 229 has steps 2,3 &4, barrier was given in class and in the cyber power point.) or the CyberEd Power Point we saw today. DO IT IN PENCIL AND NO PICTURES ARE REQUIRED! It doesn't need to be long! Just short and to the point!! Due tomorrow Wed. 4/24/13

Homework for Thursday 4/11/13
The students used the computer lab today to do 2 interactive simulations/ web quests on understanding natural selection. If your child did not finish in class they took it home to complete for tomorrow. The homework for periods A,B,D, F is a work sheet on genetic variations and what causes them, on the front page and the back page is a great article on the Galapagos Island Penguin, they need to list is favorable adaptations and explain how each helps it to be fit to survive in its environment. Due tomorrow, Fri 4/12/13.

Wednesday 4/10/13 Homework:
Today we watched the Brain Pop series videos on Charles Darwin, Natural Selection and Genetic Mutations. The last page of the video Handout is the homework page for tonight- it is titled Vocabulary Activity and be sure NOT to just copy definitions from the textbook! Try to explain the meaning in your own words- you may use examples to help if needed.
REMINDER: PLEASE MEET FOR CLASS IN THE COMPUTER LAB TOMORROW- we are doing a Web Quest on Charles Darwin and Natural Selection.

Tuesday 4/9/13 Homework:
In class we went through an interactive powerpoint called "Charles Darwin's Finches and Natural Selection". We filled in the front of a companion worksheet as we worked through it. The back of the worksheet is Understanding Species Graphs and that is the side that needs to be completed for homework tonight. Due Tomorrow- Wed. 4/10. Students who did not complete Monday night's homework also still need to complete that packet as well.

Complete the 2 pg packet "Functions of Adaptations". Be sure to Explain HOW the animal uses that adaptation to survive WELL in it's environment. Remember nature selects for the adaptations that are the BEST FIT to the current environment to survive longer than those with not as fit adaptions. "SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST!" On the last page, read the article on the La Brea Tar Pits located here in Los Angeles, CA. Bold words are highlighted purple and then select 2 pieces of information in EACH paragraph that you found interesting or did not know before, and highlight those YELLOW!!

REMEMBER phenotypes are the physically displayed or expressed trait that you can SEE WITH YOUR EYES in the offspring! It's what they LOOK LIKE. Genotypes are the 2 letters you inherited from the egg and sperm ex. BB, Bb, bb.

Monday March 11 Homework:
Today in class we used the iPads to go to a Quizlet website on Mrs. Jaime Stanton's staff website on the Alvarado School website. The site allows students to access a deck of vocabulary flash cards, study them and then quiz themselves on the meanings of the words i a variety of ways. I gave the students a worksheet to guide them through playing the different self quiz strategies. Most students finished the Flower Deck of cards and they can complete the Asexual/Sexual Reproduction Deck and the Genetics Deck at home by using the internet to access the www.alvaradoschool.org website, go to STAFF, select staff directory, scroll down to Jaime Stanton and click in her name. This will open her website and on the right side is a gold box with a list in it. The last item on the list is Quizlet Website. Click on that and it takes your student right to the list of the decks where they can continue to review the vocabulary and play the quiz games. All vocabulary is related to the topics covered on the checkpoint #3 test.
The students are to fix or finish the Checkpoint #3 Review given to them on Friday the 8th and I handed out a worksheet called SpongeBob Bikini Bottom Genetics worksheet/Heredity Cloze work sheet for tonight's homework. Both are due complete by tomorrow as we will go over the answers and review for the checkpoint test in class.
REMEMBER THE SCIENCE CHECKPOINT 3 TEST IS WEDNESDAY MARCH 13TH!! Be prepared and study hard!

Students are to complete the Genetics practice packet from last Friday, we went over it in class today, due tomorrow.
Students were given a worksheet titled Mendelian Genetics Worksheet. They are to do their BEST to complete it! Even if you are NOT SURE- make your best guess! It is due tomorrow as well.

Please complete both sides of the handout titled "Punnett Squares- step by step" to be stamped for credit tomorrow in class. I have attached the CPO textbook 9.1 power point for any students who want to read or study with it.

ALL PERIODS A,B,C,D,F: Also Due is the Completed Lab 9A Write Up (make sure Q's 4a-e are complete!) !! This is the first and only lab we have so far this quarter so it CRITICAL that you turn it in!! It can greatly influence your grade in this class.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO PRACTICE THE VOCABULARY WORDS FOR CH. 9.1!! Also read the Cyber Ed power point handout from class today and practice the words Homozygous, Heterozygous, and genotypes ( ex. TT, Tt, tt) phenotypes, dominant (Capital letters) and recessive (lowercase letters).

I have attached the CPO textbook power point for 9.2. Please use it to review the content from todays Cyber Ed Ppt, as that one cannot be posted here. The CPO covers the same concepts and is very user friendly. It has some great slides that show how to make a Punnett Square and how to use it to calculate the % frequency of traits in the offspring. Homework for 2/11 and 2/12:
The word bank for 14.3 Reproduction in flowering plants is due completed by we'd 2/13.
I have assigned a poster mini project titled
Reproduction in Flowering Plants. The students are to draw the 9 pictures on pg 296 in the order that was shown to them in class. It starts with the mature purple flower, and then the 3 pictures of pollination and fertilization are inserted in the oval cycle so that makes pictures 1, 2, 3, and 4, followed by the rest of the cycle pictures clockwise ending with the germination and sprouting picture. This will make an oval clockwise labeled cycle of the 9 diagrams in sequence. The sketched pictures and the arrows need to be colored and correctly labeled. The top half of the poster contains the title at the very top and the color coded handout of the parts of the flower and their functions which should be trimmed to fit and glued using glue stick, to the to top half of the poster. This diagram can be found on pg 294.

Students also have an extra night to complete the meiosis step by step cut and paste and describe activity, both are due tomorrow 2/7.
THE 8.2 MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS TEST IS FRIDAY 2/8/13! Please study ALL work you have done from this section and memorize the vocabulary needed for this topic. Some key words are: homologous, gamete/ sex cell, somatic/ body cell, haploid/ half set, diploid/ full set, asexual and sexual reproduction and be able to give examples of organisms who use each type, as well as describe the number and types of cells that result from the 2 types of cell division.

Thursdays homework was to try and complete a "World of Plants" video handout that we started in class and are completing in class then grading Friday.

Friday in class we will start by putting all of our first semester science notebook papers in an organized stack, rubber band them with a title page on top and turn them into the counter area. The students have been reminded daily for 2 weeks to organize the papers and bring them to class on Friday the 25th.

For the weekend: Please be sure to get your composition book and have it in class on Monday the 28th. We will be using it in class almost daily as a science journal, starting on Monday the 28th. I have requested that students PRE-READ pages 300-301 in the textbook to prepare for our first journal entry. There is no assigned homework.

Ok! We have finished taking the 2nd Checkpoint test! We will now reviewing the steps of the scientific method by reading an article in National Geographic Extreme Explorers magazine in class that shows how real scientists used the steps to figure out how hundreds of years ago the natives on Easter Island moved the colossal statues of solid stone faces from the middle of the island to the shore, which is a long distance! (and only with man power, and no powerful machines!) We will also be seeing the PBS video about the article. The white handout that was handed out in class Tuesday the 15th will be DUE on Thursday the 17th.

Tonight's homework is to complete The Y chart on eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and the 8.1 true/false Level guide using the text book. remember yellow for true/false, orange for page # and BE SURE you correct any statements you believe to be false!! If you want to work ahead, do the mitosis diagrams on the back of both packets.
ALSO BE SURE YOU ARE REVIEWING THE PHOTOSYNTHESIS /CELLULAR RESPIRATION CYCLE! It is on pgs 118-122. you MUST memorize the the chemical formulas reactants---->(chemical reaction) = Products
in an animal cell:
Glucose + oxygen (in mitochondria)---> Energy + CO2 + water vapor (H2O)
in a plant cell:
CO2 + H2O (in Chloroplast) +sunlight -----> Glucose (C6H12O6) +O2 (oxygen gas)
the products of one become the reactants in the other and so the biological cycle continues as does life on this planet!
(note: sometimes glucose is seen as "carbohydrate" in the formula- they are the same!)

Read and highlight the article, answer Q 1-4, and do the main idea chart and list the 4 parts of the cell theory on the top of the next page. Please do them hotdog style- questions in orange boxes on the left and yellow highlighted answers directly across from the Q on the Right side. ALl Due tomorrow Jan 8th, Tuesday. (note: you must sketch in pencil-no color needed- the diagrams of the phases for Q number 5 to get full points)
REMINDER: your cell cycle poster project is due Tuesday the 8th as well, I will still take them 1 day late on Wednesday the 9th of Jan. BUT NOT after that date.

Tonight's homework is to complete the photosynthesis and cellular respiration Crossword Puzzle and the Photo/Cellular Resp. matching and cycle worksheet you received today in class. Use your power point notes, your foldable and the text book pgs 118-122 to help you. Remember 3 of the matching words are for extra credit if you want to look them up in a different source: Kreb's Cycle, glycolysis, and ADP. All of teh other terms are in our textbook.
Grading both in class tomorrow as review for the TEST which is on Thursday 12/13.

You now have power point notes and a wordbank on the photosynthesis and cellular respiration cycle. You will be making a 5 flap foldable to help you remember the details of each one and how they function together in the big biological cycle that sustains life. Please follow the directions on the handout and use your Ppt Notes and the book and wordbank to help you.

WE HAVE A TEST TOMORROW ON PROKARYOTIC AND EUKARYOTIC CELLS, LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION IN MULTICELLULAR ORGANISMS, AND CELL DIFFERENTIATION AND SPECIALIZATION, Which are the last 3 flaps we have completed in our cell basics flap notes. You were given the TEST REVIEW STUDY GUIDE today for homework. it is the best way to prepare for the test other than verbally explaining the material to another person, pet or stuffed animal in your home.

Reminder: the cell organelle Grid Sheet is not due tomorrow, but on Monday the 3rd.

Complete Flap 4: Cell Differentiation. Be sure to have examples in your definitions, and use complete sentences to explain why cell differentiation is needed in multicellular organisms.
Remember to add color to all of your drawings, including the one for this flap- which is on page 162.

Over Break you started flap 2 on Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells. The top of that flap is the 2 drawings on page 96 in the book. be SURE to make them look the same and LABEL all their features! on the bottom is a double bubble map- you can use the one I gave you or draw your own. Prokaryotic on the left, Eukaryotic on the right. Use your classifying cell notes from class and put one bullet fact in each bubble.

Monday 11/26 Homework: Complete Flap 3: Levels of Organizatipon pgs 33-34 in the book and organelles is on pg 98-101. Top Flap is a list of the terms and their definitions, and the Bottom flap is a 6 box flow map Box 1 is cell organelles, box 2 is Cells, box 3 is Tissues, box 4 is organs, box 5 is organs systems and box 6 is One whole Organism. The title and a picture representing each one is required.

The HW is: Complete your study guide review worksheet for the TEST tomorrow on
1) 5 Characteristics of living things
2) Cell Theory

Remember WHEN YOU STUDY to TALK the material and not just read it, as a better way to study!

Homework is to complete pictures 3 and 4 of the cell theory on the bottom of flap one(cell theory flap) in your Cell Basics Notes Foldable. Remember the scientist for picture 3 is "Many Scientists" and the 3 scientists for picture 4 DNA are listed on page 194 in Ch. 10- 2 men and one woman. Please rememeber to label and color the pictures.

Characteristics of Living Things Foldable Mini Project
Remember to spell correctly and color flaps and pictures.

Homework is to do the first 2 boxes on the Cells foldable notes(THIS IS NOT A PROJECT- IT IS NOTES FOR CH. 5!). The information is found in the large picture on page 94 in the text book. In class we folded the paper and students were shown how to put the four boxes on the top and bottom of the inside of the first flap. The first 2 parts of the cell theory (first 2 boxes) are due tomorrow-Friday 11/15. They will be stamped on Friday as completed- or not stamped- as incomplete. Please see the attached instruction sheet if needed.

REMINDER: THE 5 CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS FLAPS BROCHURE IS DUE TOMORROW ONLY!! Please turn it in even if it is incomplete!!!
