Reading Homework

 

Each child should read for a total of 30 minutes each day, including weekends.  You may need to start with less time, and that is perfectly OK!  Just slowly build up, and soon you will reach your goal!  There are 2 kinds of reading that your child will work on: Shared Reading and Silent Reading.  Depending on your child's needs, you will spend a different amount of time in each area.

 

Book Wizard is a search engine that allows you to find books at your child's reading level.  After you put in their reading level, you can refine the search by area of interest or grade level.  If you need your child's reading level or assistance, please let me know!  

 

 

All children should participate in shared reading throughout the week.  If your child is reading at a Guided Reading level "L" or below, you should spend about 1/2 of your time each day on shared reading.  If your child is reading at a Guided Reading level "M" or above, you should spend about 1/4 of your time each WEEK on shared reading.  

 

Shared reading is when you actually sit down and read with your child.  This book should be easy and enjoyable for both readers.  You might take turns reading 1 page at a time.  You might read different characters.  The person that reads with your child might be you, a sibling, another relative, or a friend.  After every page or two, the readers should take turns asking each other questions.

 

The rest of the time should be spent silent reading.  This is time for the child to read books they enjoy.  Most of the time the books should be at their reading level.  However, sometimes, the child's interest and reading level are not a match.  My rule is 2 of the books need to be at their reading level and the next book can be above or below, so that they can read about things that interest them.

 

Some ways to silent read include:

Inside, outside, even in the bathtub with a pillow, blanket and flashlight! (but no water!)

Listen to the book on tape, CD, or youtube while following along in the book
