Eighth Grade English Language Arts (Period 2) Assignments

Today, students will take a final test on the novel, The Outsiders.  Students will choose to take either a short-answer test or multiple choice test.

 

Prior to the test, students will turn in study questions for chapters 7-12.  Students were asked to answer these questions during class as we read the novel.

 

Also, all chapters are available to read online or listen to on Youtube.

Theme poem based on The Outsiders is due by Wednesday, May 21.  Complete directions and class time have been given to all classes. No late papers will be accepted.

Students have read the first 5 chapters of The Outsiders.  They have begun, and some have completed, several assignments.  Any outstanding assignments are due at the beginning of class on Monday.  These assignments include:

 

Comprehension questions for 1-3

double bubble comparing and contrasting the Socs and the Greasers

characterization chart of the 6 main characters

Newspaper article.

On Monday, March 4, during class, students will begin to write a rough draft for their argument essay using their research and outline.  On Wednesday, March 6, students will have editing partners to make corrections in rough draft.  Students will have class time on Wednesday and Thursday to write a final draft of this essay.  

 

This project will be graded on the quality of the research notes, sources used page, outline and final draft. This packet of work is due at the beginning of class on Friday, March 8.

Research for argument essay is due this Friday, March 1st.  During class, students will be guided through creating an outline with their notes on their research.  

In class, students have read Ender's Game. Also during class, students have been working on a Multi-genre project.  All directions and supplies needed have been given to students.

 

If a student did not finish this project in class, he or she needs to finish it as homework and turn it in on Monday, February 11.

 

If a student shares an assignment with me through a google account by 7:00 AM on Monday, I can print it out before school begins, hand to a student right when class begins.  I can't print out assignments once school begins.

Students are hand writing a rough draft of a narrative and it is due Tuesday, at the beginning of class.  This narrative should be 1 1/2 -2 pages in length, and all directions have been given.  Students can write this narrative during class on Friday and Monday. 

Two plot charts for two stories is due Thursday.  One is for the short story, "Flowers for Algernon."  Another is for a story that students will write in class. All students began these assignments during class on 9/26.

Presentation of "Patriots Event Profile" will take place during class.  This assignment was introduced on Thursday, September 13, and students have had several days to work on this project during class.

Students will take a test today on the parts of speech we have studied so far this year.  This includes subject, verb/verb phrase, prepositions, and prepositional phrases.

 

Students have practiced identifying these parts of speech many times during class, and they have information explaining each part thoroughly.

 

Students have been encouraged to review this information several times a week to reinforce learning.
